James Powderly is an engineer and artist developing creative and practical technologies in the public domain. James was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee and received his Bachelor of Music in composition and theory from the University of Tennessee. He studied at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, receiving his Master's Degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program. After graduation, James worked as a technician, then an engineer and finally the director of technology development at Honeybee Robotics, an aerospace robotics firm in New York City. At Honeybee, his work included building a 16-foot tall robot for Architects Diller + Scofidio's Whitney Museum retrospective and the development and testing of the Rock Abrasion Tool for NASA JPL's Mars Exploration Rovers. The Rock Abrasion Tool is still in operation on the planet Mars. In 2005, James received a fellowship to work in the Eyebeam OpenLab where he makes open source tools for graffiti writers and DIY enthusiasts.

James's work and collaborations with artists have been exhibited at such places as the Whitney Museum, the third Artbots in Harlem, NYC and the Maker Faire. His projects have been featured on National Public Radio and in the New York Times, as well as TIME, WIRED and Make magazines. His collaboration with Evan Roth, the Graffiti Research Lab, was given an Award of Distinction in Interactive Art at the 2006 Ars Electronica.

James lives and works in New York City with his wife and partner, Michelle Kempner.
